The Hopwood Awards writing program is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. As well as awarding more than 20 separate prizes for fiction, poetry, and playwriting, the program does much to encourage and nurture writers at the University by sponsoring lectures and readings by prominent authors, hosting weekly teas in the Hopwood Room where students gather as part of a community to meet and talk to other writers, and providing young writers with the opportunity to meet and learn from professionals such as agents or publishers.
While the awards themselves are supported through the original endowment, all of the other activities of the program, including the purchase of books and subscriptions to literary journals, are paid for out of the program’s budget. Gifts from private individuals would ensure that such activities can continue.
In addition, as part of its mission to encourage and reward excellent writing, the program is seeking to raise funds to establish an additional fiction contest in the future.
There are many ways that friends of the Hopwood program can help fund Hopwood activities. To learn more, please email Andrea Beauchamp at abeauch@umich.edu.
