A safe and just campus climate

February 2012

The University of Michigan is embarking on a year-long process to develop a procedure for handling allegations of student sexual misconduct. This effort is in response to additional guidance provided to all colleges and universities by the U.S. Department of Education.

In the fall of 2011, the university put an interim policy in place that gives the university community the space to engage in a thoughtful discussion of how best to implement long-term changes. Those changes must be compliant with applicable authority and consistent with the values and traditions of the university. The first phase of interviews that are part of this process are now getting under way.
